SR22 Insurance Cost

Have you ever wondered how much SR22 insurance costs? You might not have wondered about this topic if you have never been required to purchase SR22 insurance, but you probably have wondered about this topic if you have been required to purchase it. SR22 insurance is required in some states if a driver who wants to continue driving has been convicted of certain kinds of traffic infractions.

The cost of SR22 insurance will vary depending on your own particular rate, which is determined for you by the auto insurance company that agrees to be your carrier. The factors that are used to determine this rate are no different than what they would be if you weren’t buying insurance associated with the SR22. The reason for this is that the SR22 is not so much insurance as it is a certificate proving to the state that you have purchased driver’s insurance. It is evidence that you can be held financially liable if the circumstances arise – due to a car accident, for example – in which you (or someone representing you) must pay money to another party.

What this boils down to is this. Imagine you are found guilty of committing several traffic violations in a short period of time. The court says that you cannot drive unless you submit a SR22 form. This is an extra chore or obligation you must fulfill in order that you might legally drive again. Your insurance costs, or your insurance rate, might go up as a result of the fact that you have been found guilty of committing several traffic violations in a short period of time, but it is technically separate from the SR22 form. This form merely shows the state that you still have purchased driver insurance, and that your insurance company has still agreed to be your insurance provider.

There is a fee associated with the actual SR22 form, which you must fill out and submit to the state government (usually the Department of Motor Vehicles), but this fee is minimal. It varies according to the state you live in, but usually it is somewhere between $15 and $25. Minimal, however, is a relative word. Fifteen dollars might seem like not much money to some people, but to others it might seem like quite a lot of money indeed. It depends on the financial circumstances of your life, and how much you can afford to pay for certain items.

The way to avoid having to fill out an SR22 form is to avoid certain kinds of traffic violations. If a person commits the crime known as Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or the crime known as Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), he or she can expect the cost of his or her insurance to increase, and to be required to fill out and submit the SR22 form. So not only will this person be paying the costs of an increased driving insurance rate, but his person will also be paying the fee associated with the processing of the SR22 form.
